Google to invest another EUR 1 billion in Dutch data centres

Google has announced an investment of another EUR 1 billion in its data centres in the Netherlands. This includes another expansion of its existing site at Eemshaven in the north of the country, on top of the plans already announced in 2018, and a new data centre being built at the Agriport in the city of Hollands Kroon. This brings the company to a total investment of EUR 2.5 billion in the Netherlands since 2016.

The construction work is expected to employ 1,000 people a day at each site and running the data centres will create 350 jobs in Eemshaven and 125 at the Agriport. Both sites should be completed in 2020.

This is the first time that Google invests in two separate sites in the same country. According to the company, the Netherlands offers an excellent digital infrastructure, qualified personnel, sufficient renewable energy and support from the local authorities and communities.

The company said the data centres will support services such as Search, Gmail and YouTube and run entirely on renewable energy.
