Google is scaling back its free online storage in the Google Photos app. From June 2021, all photos will count towards the 15 GB storage limit across a customer's Google Account. Currently customers have unlimited storage for photos of less than 16MP or videos with a maximum HD quality. They can agree to allow Google to compress the files so they fall within the limit for unlimited storage.
Google said the new cap applies only to new photos and videos uploaded after 01 June 2021, and any existing photos will be excluded. Customers with one of its Pixel devices will not be affected by the new cap.
The Google Account's free 15 GB of online storage is shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos. The change for photos comes amid increasing demand for online storage and follows Google's introduction in 2018 of the 'Google One' subscription offers to encourage customers to pay for extra space. Additional storage starts from USD 1.99 per month for 100 GB.
