Google, Yandex face Russian probe over abusing search market position

Russian federal competition regulator FAS is checking search services at Google and its Russian rival Yandex for suspected abuse, reports Cnews.ru. The regulator suspects the two of favouring their own services in the search results over other providers. Both Google and Yandex have already responded to inquiries from the Russian regulator.

The European Commission recently fined Google EUR 2.4 billion for the same violation. Analysts doubt whether such fines are possible in Russia as the competition between Google and Yandex is more intense there and should prevent the companies from abusing their positions.

Russian federal competition regulator FAS has started an investigation into Google, reports Vedomosti. The investigation was begun after Google ran an advert featuring online casino Volcano. This kind of advertising for a search company is prohibited in Russia. The investigation was started after a complaint was filed by an undisclosed user.

Yandex upgrades its navigation app

Russian internet search engine Yandex has upgraded its 'Yandex/Navigator' mobile application, reports Prime. The can now calculate traffic speed on different stretches of road. Users can set routes taking into account specified traffic lines. The app can now recognise traffic jams, too. I can be downloaded onto Android and iOS-based mobile devices.

Yandex to launch new paid online video-service

Russian internet search engine Yandex plans to launch a chargeable video service enabling customers to watch films, reports Vedomosti citing unspecified sources close to the company. Yandex is currently negotiating with copyright holders on the acquisition of carriage rights. The service is expected to be launched at the end of this year or shortly after.

Google files appeal against EU search competition fine

Google has filed an appeal against the EUR 2.4 billion fine imposed on the company in the EU for allegedly favouring its own services on its search engine over rival shopping sites, in violation of competition law. The Luxembourg-based General Court, Europe's second-highest, is expected to take several years before ruling on the appeal, Reuters reports.

Google offers Yandex, Mail.ru search engines on Chrome in Russia

Google has expanded search options on its Chrome browser for Android users, reports Cnews.ru. Russian search engines Yandex and Mail.ru are now available, rather than Google search as the default option. The change is in line with Google's commitments to the Russian competition watchdog FAS, which earlier found the company was abusing its dominant position by making its own search service the default option.
