Honduras preparing rescue plan for Hondutel

The Honduran government is preparing a financial rescue plan for troubled state-owned operator Hondutel, reports local daily El Heraldo, citing general coordinating secretary Carlos Madero. The aim is to convert the company into a "state-of-the-art internet and broadband provider," said the minister, adding that "this means we must modernise the institution and change the megabit capacity it can provide to the population."

Madero said the outgoing government’s investment will be large-scale and will include the acquisition of another submarine cable to double or triple existing internet bandwidth so that Hondutel can better compete with rivals.

The operator has suffered losses exceeding HNL 1 billion in the past 3 years and has been unable to pay the wages of its 2,200-plus employees in recent months, added the report.
