HTC stabilises operating loss, gross margin improves in Q4

HTC managed to stabilise its operating loss and improve its gross margin in the fourth quarter. The company's bottom line remained in the red, with a net loss of TWD 4.4 billion, as revenues dropped to TWD 4.1 billion from TWD 15.7 billion a year earlier.

The operating loss totaled TWD 2.8 billion, the same as in Q3 2018 and an improvement from a loss of TWD 9.6 billion in the year-earlier period. The gross margin improved to 8.0 percent from 4.7 percent in Q3. 

The company ended the period with cash of TWD 41.5 billion.

HTC said revenues for its fourth quarter sank to TWD 1.81 billion, from 4.4 billion the year before and 2.5 billion in the previous quarter. HTC reported annual revenues of TWD 10.0 billion for 2019, down 57.8 percent from a year earlier. The decline was slightly less than the 61.8 percent fall in 2018.

HTC reported revenues of TWD 2.8 billion for the second quarter, less than half the TWD 6.8 billion recorded a year earlier. However, the company said its gross margin continued to improve, reaching 20.3 percent compared to 14.7 percent in Q1, and the operating loss reduced to TWD 2.5 billion from TWD 2.7 billion in the previous quarter.

HTC slowed its decline in revenues in June, with a 34.5 percent annual drop to TWD 1.46 billion. That compares to year-on-year drops of around 70 percent in the two previous months.

HTC reduced its losses slightly in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter, while revenues continued to fall. The net loss totaled TWD 2.5 billion, compared to a loss of TWD 4.4 billion in Q4 and a profit of TWD 21.1 billion in Q1 2018 when the company sold much of its smartphone assets to Google.

The sharp decline follows the sale of much of its smartphone business to Google in January 2018, while new products such as its VR headsets and 5G router have yet to contribute significant revenues.

HTC's unlimited VR subscription to launch on 2 April for USD 12.99 per month

HTC will launch its Viveport Infinity unlimited VR subscription service on 2 April to Vive and Oculus Rift owners. It will be available for USD 12.99 a month or USD 99 a year on a pre-paid basis. The subscription will offer over 600 apps and games in addition to exclusive membership benefits such as the revamped Viveport Video application. Customers will also get a 10 percent coupon at the beginning of every month to spend on any Viveport store purchase.

HTC announced the addition of new features on its blockchain smartphone Exodus 1. Users will be able to update their devices over the air to communicate with new partners and profit from the decentralised web through a range of customised apps, the company said.

HTC shows 5G hospot at MWC, to launch in Q2 with multiple carriers

HTC unveiled at MWC in Barcelona its first 5G device, the HTC 5G Hub. The mobile broadband hotspot can support up to 20 users and will be available in Q2, initially with EE (UK), Three UK, Sprint (US) Deutsche Telekom, Sunrise (Switzerland) and Elisa (Finland).

HTC Vive launches Vive Focus Plus for enterprise VR

HTC Vive launched new premium VR standalone hardware for enterprise customers, Vive Focus Plus. It includes the existing six degrees of freedom (6DoF) Focus headset incorporated with new dual 6DoF controllers. The headset will be available for purchase starting in Q2 on www.Vive.com in 25 markets worldwide, supporting 19 languages. In most markets, the product will include an enterprise licence for use at no additional cost, the company said in a press release.

The Vive Pro Eye is an update of HTC's Vive Pro headset announced a year ago at CES and is expected to be available in Q2. The integrated eye tracking on the Vive Pro Eye gives users new levels of accessibility, including gaze-oriented menu navigation and removing the need for controllers. With the inclusion of eye tracking, the headset will allow businesses and developers to gather more data about their training environments, help optimize computer and VR performance, and offer product design and research

HTC reported revenues of TWD 23.74 billion for 2018, down 61.8 percent from the previous year. In December alone, sales fell 66.4 percent year-on-year to TWD 1.35 billion.
