The German union Ver.di said IBM has informed the supervisory board and works council committees about plans to cut almost 1,000 jobs. The company should start negotiating social plans with the responsible bodies of all the firms belonging to the IBM group in Germany in order to implement redundancies.
The CEO of IBM Germany Gregor Pillen announced job cuts at the end of October last year to be carried out in Q4. The company planned redundancies for over 2,300 employees, according to Ver.di. The union said that more than 1,200 employees have accepted IBM's offer to terminate their work contract.
Ver.di said it is "shocked" and has called on IBM to withdraw its plan to cut the jobs. The union underlined that there are alternatives to redundancies. For example, a corporate restructuring plan could be put in place with the support of qualified employees who have shown commitment to the company, especially during the pandemic.
