Icann receives over 1,900 applications for new gTLDs

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has unveiled the first applications for new generic top-level domains. The 1,930 applications came from businesses and organisations around the world looking to secure a domain based on their own name or new words such as .app, .love or .music. The applications will now be subject to a 60-day period of public comment, before Icann decides which new domains to allow. Any objections to the new domains can be filed over the next seven months with Icann. Verisign, which manages the .com and .net domains already, said it applied for 14 new names, including various transliterations of its current domains. It's also managing back-end registry services for 220 of the new applications, while Neustar announced the same services for 358 applicants, including New York City. Google also confirmed its participation, saying it applied for domains associated with its brands, like .youtube and .google, as well as some with "interesting and creative" potential, such as .lol.
