India smartphone shipments up 10% in 2018, Xiaomi leads market
Smartphone shipments in India grew by more than 10 percent or 12 million to a total of 137 million units in 2018, according to a report by Canalys. The report also shows that India now accounts for more than 10 percent of the world's smartphone market, up from 6 percent five years ago. 

The study found that Xiaomi led the market in 2018, with shipments of over 41 million units, taking 30 percent of the total Indian smartphone market. Samsung's shipments jumped 20 percent, and the company ended 2018 with a market share of 26 percent in India, followed by Vivo (10.1%), Oppo (8.5%) and Micromax (5.7%).

Vivo shipments surge 108% in India's flat smartphone market in Q1

Vivo doubled its shipments to take a record 15 percent share of the Indian smartphone market in Q1, according to data from Canalys. The vendor placed third, taking 15.0 percent of the market, up from 7.3 percent a year ago. Despite Vivo's performance, the Indian smartphone market was flat, growing by under 2 percent to 30.1 million units. Xiaomi held onto its lead but grew just 4 percent to 31 percent, its slowest rate since it entered the market.

Xiaomi released its first Android Go phone, the Redmi Go, in India at an event in New Delhi. Powered by the Go version of Android 8.1 Oreo, which is designed for low-memory, entry-level smartphones, the device has a 5-inch 720p 16:9 screen, two cameras of 8 and 5 megapixels, 1GB of RAM, the Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor up to 1.4GHz, 3,000mAh battery and 8GB of expandable internal storage. India shipped 142.3 million smartphones in 2018, which represents an increase of 14.5 percent year-on-year compared to 2017. After a strong third quarter, India's smartphone market saw a sequential decline of 15.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018, due to high channel inventory, but saw a healthy annual growth of 19.5 percent, driven primarily by multiple rounds of sales by e-tailers beyond the festive Diwali period lasting into December, according to a report from IDC.

The Brazilian smartphone market is set to grow by 0.1 percent in units shipped in 2019, but 18 percent in revenues, due to higher prices, according to IDC Brasil. The revenue growth is linked to the arrival of more expensive smartphones, with prices exceeding BRL 10,000, reports MobileTime.com.br from the market researcher's report.

Global smartphone shipments reached 365.2 million units in Q4 2018, which is a 5.7 percent year-on-year decline, according to IHS Markit preliminary smartphone data. The market decreased for a third consecutive quarter, researchers noted. For the 2018 calendar year, shipments declined 2.4 percent compared to the previous year to 1.41 billion units in 2018.
