
Italy retained its position as the cheapest country in Europe for residential 4G services in the third quarter of the year, although the Netherlands now offers by far the lowest average cost per GB, according to the latest study from Point Topic. A comparison of the average monthly subscription charges offered by mobile broadband providers across the EU-28, Norway and Switzerland revealed that Italians paid USD 19.30 a month for their 4G plans in the July to September period, receiving an average data allowance of 50GB, equivalent to USD 0.39 per GB.
Mobile operators in the Netherlands, meanwhile, offered consumers an average monthly data allowance of 154GB for an average of USD 28.53 a month, meaning the country offered by far the lowest average cost per GB among six mature markets selected by Point Topic at USD 0.19, compared to USD 1.19 per GB in France, USD 96.3 in Sweden, USD 0.66 in the UK, USD 0.42 in Germany and USD 0.39 in Italy.
With the inclusion of newly-launched 5G networks, the average monthly charge for residential 4G/5G data services varied from around USD 19 in Spain, Italy and Poland to just under USD 55 in Greece and Cyprus. The report quotes prices in US dollars at PPP (purchasing power parity) rates to allow for easier comparison.
