Kabel Deutschland abandons Tele Columbus deal
German cable network operator Kabel Deutschland has finally abandoned its plans to acquire rival Tele Columbus, Reuters reports. A Kabel Deutschland spokesperson said that it had withdrawn its appeal against a Federal Cartel Office decision to block the takeover. The spokesperson said that it did not want a protracted legal battle following its takeover by Vodafone Group.

Tele Columbus upgrades digital TV offering

German cable network operator Tele Columbus will launch a new digital TV offering for customers on its Berlin network from 15 October. The number of private free-to-air channels in the HD-Package will be increased from 7 to 17, including HD versions of RTL II, Super RTL, RTL Nitro, n-tv, DMAX, VIVA, Tele 5, Deluxe Music, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, on top of RTL, ProSiebenSat.1 and Sport1 channels. Vodafone announced that the voluntary public takeover offer for German cable network operator Kabel Deutschland has been completed. Vodafone now owns 76.57 percent of Kabel Deutschland's share capital. Kabel Deutschland plans more hotspots in German cities

German cable network operator Kabel Deutschland plans to activate at least 200 public WLAN hotspots in over 20 German cities nationwide by end-2013. These include Braunschweig, Bremen, Dresden, Erfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Kiel, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Mainz, Oldenburg, Osnabrueck, Rostock, Saarbruecken and Trier. The European Commission (EC) has cleared the acquisition of German cable network operator Kabel Deutschland Holding by Vodafone Group.
