KPN raises 4G speeds, increases data bundles

KPN is increasing the size and speeds of its 4G data plans from July, with no change in pricing. The Dutch operator will also start the deployment of 1,800 MHz spectrum in its LTE network, using carrier aggregation to increase capacity. The network upgrade will start in the Randstad (Amsterdam, Schiphol, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht) and Eindhoven.

The entry-level plans will now have the same speeds as more expensive plans, going from 25/5 Mbps to 50/25 Mbps. In addition Sim-only plans will come with the same data allowances as plans with handsets. The two lowest plans of 250 and 500 MB will both increase to 1 GB per month, and the most expensive plan will come with 5GB, rather than 4GB with a handset and 2GB Sim-only. Some Hi plans will also come with increased data, and all Hi plans, Sim-only and contract, will have the maximum speed of 50/25 Mbps.

KPN said the deployment of 1,800 MHz band frequencies will also prepare the way for the introduction of LTE Advanced later this year. At a presentation in Delft, the company showed LTE-A achieving speeds of 200 Mbps. The operator is working with Ericsson on the roll-out.
