Malone takes leave from Charter's board of directors

John Malone has announced his retirement from the board of US cable operator Charter Communications. Malone, chairman of Liberty Global, Liberty Media and the Qurate Retail Group (formerly Liberty Interactive), will still serve the company as a director emeritus. He will attend board meetings and have a say, but no longer have a vote. 

Malone was the Liberty Broadband nominee to the board and with his departure, will be replaced by Jim Meyer, the CEO of Liberty Broadband unit Sirius XM. Meyer will serve along with Liberty Broadband’s other two designees, Gregory Maffei and Balan Nair. 

Malone said he is leaving in order to reduce travel and focus on few board positions.

Charter Communications, Comcast and Cox Communications, owners of NCC Media, are creating a new division within NCC to design, deploy and sell unified advertising products across NCC's participants' national footprint. Malone says no serious offers for Charter yet

US cable operator Charter Communications has received takeover approaches from at least four companies, but none have been serious enough for the board to consider, according to director John Malone. In an interview with CNBC, he mentioned the names of executives from Altice, Softbank and Verizon as potential acquirers of Charter. When asked for the identity of the fourth company, Malone said "I'm not going to tell ya."

Softbank restarts merger talks with Charter - report

SoftBank Group has restarted merger talks with Charter Communications, the New York Post reported, citing a source close to the situation. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son had earlier said he was considering other deals than the coming together of Deutsche Bank's T-Mobile with Sprint, if ever that deal were to collapse, with market watchers saying he meant Charter. The source said that while the talks to merge with Charter, owned by John Malone, may not yet be advanced, they did include high-level executives.
