Italian operators Metroweb, Vodafone Italia and Wind have signed a two-month extension to their non-binding letter of intent that was due to expire on 31 December. The parties signed the extension at the Milan headquarters of infrastructure fund F2i, which controls 53.8 percent of Metroweb, with a view to defining the specific Italian cities in which to roll out a joint fibre-optic network via a new vehicle called Metroweb Sviluppo (Metroweb Development).
Wind CEO Maximo Ibarra spoke of the joint rollout plans in an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore, stressing that “I think it's time to start… because the country needs this and deadlines are tight.” Ibarra also confirmed that Wind is prepared to work with Enel Open Fiber, the new fibre-optic venture set up by Italian utility giant Enel. "The two entities can be complementary and Wind is ready to work with both,” he said.
