Microsoft hires former McAfee CEO Young as EVP for business development

Microsoft has hired the former McAfee CEO Christopher Young as executive vice president of business development. Young will report directly to CEO Satya Nadella.

Young left McAfee early this year to work at its owner TPG Capital as an adviser. In 2017, he led the initiative to spin McAfee out of Intel as a standalone company. Previously, Young held senior positions at Cisco, VMware, RSA and AOL.

Young will be responsible for developing Microsoft's global business development strategies that drive growth across the company. This includes leading the evaluation and execution of strategic partnership opportunities, including alliances, venture investments and joint ventures that align with corporate strategy.  

Young's other positions include seats on the US President's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC) and on the boards of American Express and Snap.

McAfee revenues rise 10% in Q3, lifted by 23% rise in consumer sales

McAfee, which returned to the market in October, reported a breakeven net profit for the third quarter to 26 September, on revenues up 10 percent from the year before to USD 728 million. Consumer revenue led growth, rising 23 percent to USD 395 million. Enterprise revenue meanwhile slipped lower to USD 333 million from 340 million. The adjusted EBITDA meanwhile lifted 26 percent to USD 265 million.

Microsoft maintains quarterly revenue growth at 12% on demand for Azure, consumer products

Microsoft maintained solid double-digit growth in its fiscal first quarter to September, thanks to demand for its cloud services as well as consumer products. Revenue rose 12 percent year-on-year to USD 37.2 billion, slowing only slightly from 13 percent growth in the previous quarter. Operating profit was up 25 percent to USD 15.9 billion, and net profit jumped 30 percent to USD 13.9 billion.

Amazon challenged the award of the contract after the Pentagon awarded it to Microsoft in October. The move follows reports in the US government is looking to ban TikTok in the country on national security concerns, due to the company's potential ties to the Chinese government and consequences for US user data privacy.

Microsoft permanently shuts down all retail stores worldwide

Microsoft has confirmed that it will be closing all its physical retail stores worldwide to focus on online sales. In a statement, the company said its retail team members will continue to serve customers from Microsoft corporate facilities and remotely provide sales, training and support. It also intends to "reimagine" four locations – London (Oxford Circus), Sydney (Westfield), New York (Fifth Avenue) and its Redmond campus – as Microsoft Experience Centres.

Microsoft has agreed to buy Metaswitch Networks, a provider of virtualized network software and voice, data and communications services aimed at operators. No financial details were provided.
