Microsoft starts public preview of mobile gaming service Project xCloud

Microsoft announced it will start a public preview of its streaming gaming service Project xCloud in October. The preview is open to Xbox users in the US, UK and Korea.

Interested participants can register online, and Microsoft will start sending out invites in the coming weeks. The company said it will start with a small number of participants to get initial feedback, then open it up to more and more gamers. Initial games in the preview include Halo 5: Guardians, Gears 5, Killer Instinct, and Sea of Thieves, with more to be added as the preview progresses.

With the emphasis on mobile gaming, participants in the trial need to have a phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or higher with Bluetooth 4.0, a Microsoft account and a Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One Wireless Controller. Microsoft also recommends a phone mount for the controller. The content will be delivered over the Microsoft Game Streaming app and Wi-Fi or mobile networks.

The company has signed up technical partners to help optimise the service during the preview over 4G and 5G networks. These are SK Telecom in Korea, T-Mobile US and Vodafone UK. However, participants can use any network operator.
