Microsoft to retire Skype for Business in favour of Teams

Microsoft announced that it will favour its Teams service for new Office 365 customers from September, rather than Skype for Business Online. The latter service will be discontinued from 31 July 2021.

The server version of Skype for Business will remain available.

Microsoft Teams was launched in 2017 as "the hub for teamwork" in Microsoft 365 and supports chat, video, calling, and document collaboration in a single, integrated app. Microsoft said it's worked to refine the application and now feels it's ready to recommend Teams as an upgrade to all Skype for Business Online customers.

Additional enhancements planned for Teams include 911 location service in the US, shorter data retention periods of as little as one day, greater integration with contact centre platforms and interoperability with consumer Skype from early 2020.

Migration support for existing Skype for Business customers will also be provided.
