Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox One, an all-in-one device for games, TV and entertainment, to be released in markets around the world later this year. The new console can be controlled by voice and motion command and is built around an eight-core x86 processor to help “make lag and load time a thing of the past”. The company promises that users will be able to jump between a game and their entertainment at lightning speed or run a host of apps alongside their game with no loss in performance. Microsoft has also announced improvements to the Kinect motion control system and to the Xbox controller. No pricing information was disclosed.
Features include Skype for Xbox One, allowing users to talk to friends on TV in HD, and for the first time hold group Skype talks on their TVs. The OneGuide function is a voice-controlled electronic programme guide that can be searched by network, name or time. Microsoft announced a range of games for its new console, including Forza Motorsport 5, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, NBA Live 14, EA Sports UFC and Quantum Break.
Microsoft will also partner 343 Industries and Steven Spielberg for the production of an original Halo live-action TV series with interactive Xbox One content. The company has signed a multi-year deal with the NFL to personalise Xbox One users’ experience through innovations around Skype, Xbox SmartGlass, player-worn technology, and a new fantasy football solution for TV. Xbox Live Gold Membership for Xbox 360 will carry over to Xbox One.
