MTN Group values mobile-money arm at USD 5 bln, mulls IPO

MTN Group estimates its mobile-money business is worth about USD 5 billion, and the mobile operator will consider a potential IPO for the activities. MTN’s valuation of its unit follows Mastercard and TPG Holdings investing in Airtel Africa’s mobile-money business at a USD 2.65 billion value. MTN CEO Ralph Mupita told Bloomberg that with similar valuations, MTN's business would be worth USD 5 billion.

No decision has been made as yet, but listing will be an option considered if that will be the best approach to unlock value, Mupita said. MTN has previously said it was looking to spin off its fintech business.

The operator  is also exploring options for its data centre business, the report said.

Airtel Money has launched the Airtel Money Mastercard virtual payment service in Zambia, enabling all Airtel Money customers in the country, even those without a bank account, to make global e-commerce payments. The deal forms part of Airtel Africa's strategic partnership with Mastercard to give over 100 million Airtel Africa mobile phone users across 14 African countries access to Mastercard's global network.

MTN Group is seeking a valuation of about USD 1.4 billion for its unit in Uganda, Bloomberg reported citing people with knowledge of the matter. It will be the nation's biggest initial public offering, the news agency said. MTN plans to sell 20 percent of the unit and raise about USD 280 million, one of the sources said, asking not to be identified before a public announcement.

MTN Group says its service revenue grew by 17.8 percent in constant currency terms to ZAR 42.3 billion in the first quarter. EBITDA rose by 21.3 percent, and the EBITDA margin widened to 44.2 percent from 42.7 percent. MTN announced a strong and resilient operational and financial performance, with growth in service revenue exceeding medium-term guidance, driven by gains in data and fintech revenue.

MTN Group confirmed that it is participating with equity partners in a bid for a telecoms licence in Ethiopia. MTN said this aligns with its Ambition 2025 strategy to capture growth from digital acceleration across the continent. The bid has been made in partnership with Silk Road Fund from China, with other partners to be disclosed upon a successful outcome.

Airtel Africa signs new USD 500 mln loan facility for refinancing

Airtel Africa said it has signed a new USD 500 million loan facility with a group of relationship banks. The company said it is a combination of a revolving credit facility and term loans, with tenor of up to four years. The facility will be used to partially refinance its EUR 750 million euro-denominated bond due 20 May, the rest of which will be repaid with existing group cash, to reduce gross debt and associated interest costs.

Despite the resilient results, the mobile operator said it's not paying a dividend for the year, due to uncertainty about asset disposal timings and the impact of the pandemic.
