Netflix and Amazon Prime Video increase original productions in France

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, the two most popular SVoD platforms in France, will both be investing in a greater number of French original productions this year, compared to 2020. Netflix announced 27 new projects across movies, TV series and documentaries that will be developed or launched by the end of 2021, up from 20 planned last year

For Amazon the acceleration will be particularly significant, partly because the pandemic delayed projects planned for 2020. Prime Video expects to launch ten French productions, compared to two in 2020 and none in 2019. As reported by Le Monde, this reflects greater investment in content across the whole of Europe. The progression is also linked to new legislation coming into force in France, requiring SVoD platforms to meet set targets in their contribution to French and European content productions.

Nearly 69 percent of the audience accessing SVoD services in France used Netflix in January, according to the latest usage survey commissioned by national film centre CNC. Amazon Prime Video remained a distant second (27%), ahead of Disney+ (20%).
