Netflix teams up with Spain's Secuoya on first European production hub
Netflix has announced the imminent inauguration of new headquarters for the production of European original content in Spain. The streaming giant has signed a multi-year contract with Spanish broadcaster and producer Grupo Secuoya, with the latter set to manage all projects produced by Netflix on the 22,000 square-meter Ciudad de la Tele production hub in the northern Madrid suburb of Tres Cantos. In a statement, Netflix said it will take occupancy of three 1,200 square metre sound-proofed theatres in the facility from September, with the option to occupy additional space as construction completes.

The Madrid campus will be a central facility for Netflix’s slate of Spanish-language original content over the coming years including new and existing titles produced by the company, as well as series and films made by its production partners. Netflix added that 13,000 people will be employed as cast, extras and technical roles working on 20 original Netflix productions across Spain this year.

The news follows the recent exclusivity deal giving Netflix first refusal over new series produced by Madrid-based broadcaster Atresmedia, The two companies had previously agreed to produce a third season of the hit series La Casa de Papel, the most-watched non-English-language show in the history of Netflix.

Just a few weeks earlier, Madrid-based Telefonica announced a multi-year agreement to integrate Netflix into its entire TV and video portfolio across Europe and Latin America.
