New York sues Charter over violation of TWC merger terms

Charter Communications faces legal action in the state of New York for failing to live up to the conditions agreed when it acquired Time Warner Cable in 2016. The New York State Public Service Commission said it started legal action against the company for potential violations of its franchise agreement and failure to fulfill certain obligations, including providing broadband access to underserved parts of the state and preserving a qualified workforce.

Under the PSC’s 2016 order approving Charter’s purchase of TWC, the cable operator is required to extend its network to pass an additional 145,000 homes and business by 2020, reports FierceCable. The commission said that Charter had failed to meet incremental milestones.

Charter said the company exceeded its last build-out commitment "by thousands of homes and businesses" and it also raised speeds to deliver faster broadband statewide. "We are in full compliance with our merger order and the New York City franchise, and we will fight these baseless actions vigorously," the company said in a statement.
