Nokia to demonstrate LTE in unlicensed 5GHz band at MWC

Nokia Networks announced it will demonstrate at MWC a small cell using licensed assisted access technology for LTE in the 5GHz band, normally an unlicensed band used for Wi-Fi. The company said it's developing the technology, which has yet to be standardised, with T-Mobile. The mobile operator announced earlier it was trialling LAA already with Ericsson in the US.

At Mobile World Congress, Nokia Networks will demonstrate the capabilities of LAA, using its Nokia Flexi Zone small cells technology, already deployed by T-Mobile on its LTE network. The demonstration will include carrier aggregation between LTE in licensed and unlicensed spectrum and the technology’s co-existence with Wi-Fi. A prototype will show LAA live to demonstrate its features and ability to co-exist in a single box with a licensed LTE small cell.

LAA is planned for 3GPP industry standardization in mid-2016. Nokia Networks said it plans to integrate LAA capabilities into its small cell portfolio at the end of 2015.
