Nokia unveils new Lumia Windows 8 phones

Nokia has unveiled at an event in New York two new Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8. The new flagship Lumia 920 introduces Qi wireless charging and a 2,000 mAh battery and comes with Nokia's advanced camera technology PureView and the new Nokia City Lens augmented reality app. City Lens overlays information about restaurants, shops, hotels and other services on the camera screen, and in Nokia Maps allows the user to switch between maps view and the augmented reality view.

The Lumia 920 features a 4.5-inch WXGA IPS screen, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor from Qualcomm, 1.2 megapixel front camera, 1GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and access to 7GB free cloud storage with Microsoft's SkyDrive service. The 8.7 megapixel camera comes with PureView image stabilisation, correcting for hand movements when taking a photo, and is able to take in five times more light than a normal smartphone without using the flash, according to Nokia. It also supports 1080p HD video recording.

In addition, Nokia introduced the mid-range Lumia 820, which comes with exchangeable shells in different colours and the option to add wireless charging and a microSD card for storage. The phone comes with the same processor, unibody design and 1GB RAM as the 920, but a smaller 4.3-inch OLED screen with 800x480 resolution, 8GB storage, 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and VGA front camera.

Both phones will be available in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants and are expected to start shipping in select markets later in the year. Nokia also announced a range of wireless charging accessories, including the Fatboy Recharge Pillow and JBL PowerUP docking station with audio playback. Nokia has also agreed its first partnerships to install wireless charging points in cafes and airports.
