Nordic countries partner to take early 5G lead

The prime ministers of the Nordic region have signed a letter of intent concerning 5G development. They declared their commitment to creating the conditions in the public sector for digitisation and 5G to flourish. They have agreed to the common vision of being the first and most integrated 5G region in the world, creating a common Nordic 5G space.

They will set up a common action plan for early adoption of 5G throughout the Nordic region. The action plan will encourage the development of new testing facilities, including test beds; ensure the technical coordination of 5G frequency bands within the region; remove obstacles to expanding the 5G network, in particular deployment of base stations and antennas; and encourage and monitor the development of 5G, specifically for certain sectors.

One of these sectors is transport, where 5G will be applied for sustainable and climate-efficient services, systems, connected vehicles, and remote-controlled airborne services, also known as drones.

In mission-critical communications, 5G will be used for the emergency services and law enforcement.

5G will be used for advanced automation in the manufacturing industry, such as through augmented reality for employees, interconnected factories and robot control.

In the energy, environment, agriculture and aquaculture sectors, 5G will be used to save power through management and smart grids, to increase farming yields, and for detailed monitoring.

The letter was signed by Stefan Lofven of Sweden, Katrin Jakobsdottir of Iceland, Lars Lokke Rasmussen of Denmark, Juha Sipila of Finland and Erna Solberg of Norway.
