Ooredoo, CK Hutchison start talks on merger of Indosat, 3 Indonesia

Ooredoo and CK Hutchison have agreed to merge their mobile operators in Indonesia, namely Indosat and Hutchison 3 Indonesia. The exclusivity period for the memorandum of understanding is valid until 30 April 2021.

Ooredoo said the companies were still in the early stages of assessing the merits of the potential deal. CK Hutchison said the merger remains subject to, amongst others, satisfactory due diligence, agreement on terms, signing of definitive agreements and obtaining of all required corporate and regulatory approvals. No financial details of the potential transaction were disclosed. 

A merger would help the two operators compete better against market leader Telkomsel. Indonesia counts in total five mobile operators; the other two are XL Axiata and Smartfren.

CK Hutchison, Ooredoo extend talks on merger of Indonesian telecom businesses

CK Hutchison said it has agreed with Ooredooto to extend the period of negotiations on the potential transaction to combine PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia, a subsidiary of the company, and PT Indosat TBK, a subsidiary of Ooredoo, on an exclusive basis. The extension will run until midnight, Hong Kong time, on 23 September. This will be the final such extension.

Ooredoo eyes up to 30% of Indonesian market after merger with Tri

Ooredoo Group is eyeing up to a 30 percent market share in Indonesia once it merges its unit in the country with rival Tri, Bloomberg reported. CK Hutchison Holdings and Ooredoo started talks in 2020 to combine their Indonesian mobile phone businesses, to fend off competition in Southeast Asia's biggest market by subscribers. Negotiations continue and the companies are awaiting regulatory approvals, Ooredoo's managing director Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo told Bloomberg Television.

Axiata mulls Malaysia, Indonesia mergers after failed deal with Telenor

Axiata is seeking merger deals in Indonesia and Malaysia. The company expects to see mergers happening for its Indonesian and Malaysian operations within three to five years, Axiata Group CEO Jamaludin Ibrahim told Bloomberg. CK Hutchison, Axiata in talks to merge Indonesia operations - report

Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison has made a preliminary offer to Axiata Group on the potential combination of their Indonesian telecommunications operations, Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter. According to these sources, CK Hutchison informally expressed interest in the merger of its Indonesian wireless business with Axiata's local unit XL Axiata. CK Hutchison and Axiata have not yet started negotiations, the same sources added.

CK Hutchison said its mobile business in Asia ended 2018 with 49.8 million active customers, down 34 percent from a year earlier. The drop was mainly due to subscriber registration rules introduced in Indonesia in April, which led to the disconnection of many second Sims. Revenues across the business still rose 7 percent to HKD 8.22 billion, with 11 percent growth in local currencies.

The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has decided to continue its investigation into the alleged cartel practices of XL Axiata and Indosat Ooredoo, The Jakarta Post reports. XL and Indosat have denied that their joint venture (JV), dubbed One Indonesia Synergy (OIS), is a cartel, and argue that the KPPU had been consulted prior to the formation of the OIS.

Bakrie Telecom, Smartfren ink merger deal

Indonesian operators Bakrie Telecom and Smartfren Telecom will merge their network operations. Via this deal, Bakrie Telecom will become one of Smartfren's shareholders, Reuters reports. Bakrie Telecom will rent the network operated by Smartfren to serve its customers, the companies said. No financial details related to the transaction have been disclosed.
