Orange accelerates sales, EBITDA growth in Q2

Orange reported an acceleration in growth in the second quarter, driven by strong growth in Spain, a recovery in Africa and the Middle East and the first sales growth in France since 2009. Revenue rose 1.4 percent to EUR 10.206 billion, compared to growth of 0.8 percent in Q1. On a comparable basis, sales were up 0.5 percent in France, 8.8 percent in Spain and 2.7 percent in Africa and the Middle East. Only Poland and the enterprise division posted lower revenue in the quarter. 

Adjusted EBITDA increased 1.1 percent to EUR 3.380 billion, giving a stable margin of 33.2 percent. On an organic basis, EBITDA rose 2.4 percent, compared to 2.2 percent growth in Q1. Orange reiterated its outlook for an increase in adjusted EBITDA over the full year on a comparable basis, after 2.2 percent growth in the first half. 

Orange said especially fixed broadband services were growing strongly in H1, with revenue up 6.3 percent, while mobile service revenue increased 0.5 percent. This was supported by a 3.4 percent increase in capital expenditure to EUR 3.276 billion in the first six months. 

Investments in fibre increased 5 percent on a comparable basis and focused on France, Spain and Poland. At the end of June, the number of households with fibre reached 10.7 million in Spain (+2.4 million year on year), 7.9 million in France (+2.0 million) and close to 2 million in Poland (+0.9 million). The operator also spent on expanding 4G coverage in Europe and has launched LTE in 11 of its 21 MEA markets.
