Orange Spain to run symmetric 1 Gbps XG-PON trial at MWC

Orange Spain has announced that it will be taking advantage of its appearance at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona from 22-25 February to conduct the first trial on Spanish soil of a symmetric 1 Gbps connection on a commercial FTTH network powered by XG-PON technology. The operator has already started using XG-PON (also known as 10G-PON) technology on its existing FTTH network, but the trial to be held on 23 February will offer 1 Gbps download and upload speeds for the first time on its commercial production network, rather than on an isolated setup.

In addition to the fibre-optic trial, the operator will also be showcasing the LTE-A technology used at its Barcelona labs to pass the barrier of 500 Mbps. Orange recently revealed that it had achieved sustained speeds of 570 Mbps by aggregating the 2,600 MHz, 1,800 MHz and 800 Mhz frequencies, boosted by 256 Quadrature Amplified Modulation (QAM) innovation.
