Orient Link, NEC to build MIST cable system
Orient Link (OLL) and NEC have signed an agreement to build the MIST cable system. The MIST cable will directly connect Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and India (Mumbai and Chennai) and deliver a design capacity of more than 216 Tbps. Construction of the nearly 8,100-kilometer optical submarine cable is scheduled for completion by the third quarter of FY2022. 

The MIST cable system is expected to enhance and contribute to the expansion of communications networks from Asia, expanding connectivity options in the Bay of Bengal. OLL has selected NEC as a supply partner. NEC will serve as supplier for MIST together with its local affiliate in India (NEC Technologies India).

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India's first undersea optical cable fibre project Chennai-Andaman and Nicobar Islands (CANI). Back in December 2018, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for the 2,312 km long submarine optical fibre cable project connecting CANI, reports India Today. Overall investments in the project reaches INR 12.24 billion, writes news agency PTI.

Google to build new undersea cable linking US, UK and Spain

Google has unveiled plans to build what will be its fourth wholly-owned cable and its second linking Europe and the US. The new Grace Hopper undersea cable between the US, UK and Spain – with landing points in New York, Bude and Bilbao – will be built by SubCom and is expected to be completed in 2022. It's named after the computer science pioneer whose work was critical in the development of the COBOL programming language.

RTI, NEC complete Japan-Guam-Australia North Cable System

RTI Connectivity (RTI) and NEC Corporation (NEC) have announced the completion of the Japan-Guam-Australia North Cable System (JGA North). JGA North is 2,700 kilometers in length and lands in Minami-Boso, Japan and Piti, Guam. The cable has an initial design capacity of 24 Tbps, which will grow to 30 Tbps in 2021.

Hawaiki upgrades US connectivity with Ciena submarine network equipment

Hawaiki has announced it has upgraded its Oregon point-of-interconnect on the US West Coast, deploying Ciena's GeoMesh submarine network equipment leveraging Waveserver Ai to create a link from Hawaii. According to Hawaiki, this route previously went from Kapolei (Hawaii) to Pacific City (Oregon) where an optical-electricaloptical regeneration was required to allow protection on the terrestrial link to Hillsboro.
