P4 acquires licences in 3.7 GHz band

Play Communications, owner of the Polish operator P4, trading under the brand Play, has received a licence from regulator UKE for frequencies in the bands 3701-3715 MHz and 3715-3729 MHz from 01 October. P4 bought the frequencies from the company Softnet Group for an undisclosed amount.

The first licence award in the band 3701-3715 MHz was originally awarded to E-internets in December 2004. The frequencies in the range 3715-3729 MHz were originally awarded to Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa (now T-Mobile Poland). The original licence holders exchanged the blocks for adjacent ones.

Both licences are valid until 29 December 2019.

Play plans to use the new spectrum to maximise capacity for LTE mobile internet and prepare for 5G. In addition, refarming the bands will guarantee protection of the existing spectrum portfolio of Play.

According to Telko.in, besides Play, T-Mobile Poland and Netia hold national licences in the above band.
