Paramount+ introduces new low-cost subscription at USD 5

ViacomCBS is introducing a new cheaper plan for its Paramount+ streaming service in the US. The new Essential plan costs USD 4.99 per month, compared to the standard price of USD 9.99 per month, and replaces the initial 'Limited Commercials' offer at USD 5.99 from 07 June for new customers. The main difference is it no longer includes access to the live CBS affiliate channel in the customer's area. 

The Essential plan (USD 50 with an annual subscription) still includes access to live sports and news, as well as the full VoD catalogue with advertising. The more expensive plan offers VoD access without ads and downloads for offline viewing.

ViacomCBS announced a new programming head for its streaming business, Tanya Giles, the current head of MTV. Under the new management structure, each of ViacomCBS's global content leaders will oversee their respective genres within Paramount+, with Giles coordinating content strategy for Paramount+ and Pluto TV globally.

ViacomCBS adds 6 mln streaming subscribers in Q1 after Paramount+ launch

ViacomCBS said it added 6 million streaming subscribers in the first quarter, thanks to the launch of the new Paramount+ service in March. This takes its total base to 36 million subscribers. The group also counted nearly 50 million monthly active users for its ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV, which also added 6 million users in the quarter.

The new services Paramount+ and Discovery+ accounted for a fifth of new SVoD subscribers in the US in the first quarter, according to the latest figures from Kantar. HBO Max took the most new subscribers for a second quarter in a row, with a 14.4 percent share, while Amazon Prime Video was in second place with 13.2 percent of new subscribers. Kantar estimates 7 percent of US households took a new SVoD subscription in Q1 2021, for a total of 241 million subscriptions at the end of March.

ViacomCBS unveils original content, prices ahead of Paramount+ launch

ViacomCBS has released more details of its new streaming service Paramount+ at an analysts meeting. The service will start at a price of USD 9.99 per month for full access when it launches 04 March and add an ad-supported tier with reduced content for USD 4.99 from June. In addition to catalogue programmes and original productions, Paramount+ will show new films from ViacomCBS's stable, Epix and MGM shortly after their cinema release or pay-TV premier and a range of live sports and news from CBS.
