Proximus, Eurofiber set up Unifiber joint venture for fibre roll-out in Wallonia

Proximus and Eurofiber have joined up in a new joint venture called Unifiber, with the aim of rolling out a fibre network in Wallonia. The goal is to cover at least 500,000 families and SMEs with a fibre connection by 2028. Unifiber will have a budget of over EUR 800 million over the next ten years to build its network. The open network will be available to all interested telecom operators.

The European authorities have given their green light for the joint venture’s establishment.  The formal agreement around the joint venture took place in October. Plans were first announced last summer.

First stop: Waterloo and Morlanwelz

The plan is to connect several tens of thousands of homes to fibre in 2022 and 2023. Then, from 2024, nearly 100,000 families will be added every year until the end goal of 500,000 premises is reached, by 2028.

Preparations for the roll-out of the Unifiber network will start in mid-August in the municipalities of Waterloo and Morlanwelz. Unifiber is based in Waterloo.

Agreements are in place already to reach 90 percent of the targeted premises, the company said.

Proximus has signed a new partnership agreement to expand its FTTP network, this time in the German-speaking region in the southeast of Belgium. Working with the regional government and insurance group Ethias in a public-private partnership, the aim is to bring fibre access to around 36,000 homes and businesses by 2026.

Belgian operator Unifiber announced the activation of the first customer on its FTTH network, in Waterloo, south of Brussels. The network operator was started last year as a joint venture between Proximus and Eurofiber.

Belgian regulator Bipt started a public consultation on the reference wholesale access offer from Unifiber. A similar consultation will start later for Fiberklaar's reference offer. Both operators are joint ventures started by Proximus last year, to cover respectively Wallonia and Flanders with FTTH.

Eurofiber to electrify fleet of employee lease cars

Eurofiber has this year introduced a "100% electric driving" policy for all employees who are entitled to a lease car. The company said it hopes in this way to reduce the CO2 footprint of its mobility by 88 percent by the end of 2026 and its total CO2 demand emissions by 36 percent.

Unifiber, the joint venture between Proximus and Eurofiber, has increased its target for homes passed to 600,000. The company said it has reached agreements on the fibre roll-out with 25 more municipalities in Wallonia, La Libre Belgique reports.

Eurofiber spends EUR 41 million on acquisitions in 2020

Eurofiber recorded revenues of EUR 188.5 million in 2020 growing 13.6 percent compared to 2019. EBITDA also rose to EUR 98.6 million with 4.1 percent more than in 2019, but net profit fell by 9.3 percent to EUR 14 million, according to the annual report filed with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce by Antin Elephant Bidco, the vehicle in which the formal owners Antin (with various funds) and PGGM put the Eurofiber Holding.

Proximus, Unifiber accelerate fibre roll-out in Wallonia

Proximus and its joint venture Unifiber announced the start of its fibre network roll-out in 15 more municipalities in Wallonia. The company said it has the support of the city and regional governments to bring new fibre services to residents, businesses and public service bodies.

Proximus to provide fibre to 60,000 households outside Brussels

Proximus will over the coming two years connect more than 60,000 homes and businesses in the Flemish periphery of Brussels to fibre. Towards this end, the provider is rolling out fibre in the municipalities of Grimbergen, Machelen, Zaventem, Kraainem, Wezembeek-Oppem and Tervuren. The ambition is to further expand the roll-out after that and to reach a coverage ratio of 83 percent in the municipalities involved by 2028.

Belgian FTTP market accelerates as homes passed double in past year

The number of homes passed by FTTP in Belgium has doubled in the past year, going from 330,000 to 664,000 as of 01 July. While fibre still has very limited coverage compared to other countries, the market is growing quickly and has reached around 3 percent of broadband connections, according to Telecompaper's 'FTTP in Belgium 2021' report.

They will combine their respective expertise in ICT, construction and energy to offer the Aug∙e platform for building energy and facilities management.
