Qualcomm releases new 5G modems for premium, mass-market devices

Qualcomm has announced new 5G modems for smartphones. These are the X65, supporting 3GPP Release 16 and 10 Gbps speeds, and the X62, to bring 5G to more mass market devices. The new products are sampling with customers already and should reach the market later this year.

This is Qualcomm's fourth generation of 5G modems and comes a year after the launch of the X60. The products offer a fully integrated system for 5G connectivity, from modem to RF transceiver to complete RF front-end.

The Snapdragon X65 targets top-of-the-range devices offering the latest advances in 5G, including smartphones, PCs, mobile hotspots, industrial IoT, fixed wireless access, and 5G private networks. The launch also comes with a dedicated mas-market version, the X62, which supports multi-gigabit download speeds for mobile broadband applications.

Qualcomm said the X65 will come with future software updates based on Release 16 features. It also supports the company's latest mmWave antenna module, the QTM545, to enhance coverage in the high frequency bands, including the new n259 (41 GHz) band.

Other advances in the X65 include Qualcomm 5G PowerSave 2.0, which builds on new power-saving technologies defined in 3GPP Release 16, such as Connected-Mode Wake-Up Signal, and Qualcomm Smart Transmit 2.0, which takes advantage of modem-to-antenna system awareness to increase upload data speeds and enhance coverage for both mmWave and sub-6 GHz bands while remaining within RF emissions limits.
