Qualcomm says next flagship mobile processor to be built on 7nm, carry 5G modem

Qualcomm announced that its next flagship processor for smartphones will be produced on 7nm technology and include a 5G modem. Further details on the platform will be announced in Q4, and the first devices running the chip are expected to reach the market in 2019.

The system-on-chip will be built on the 7nm process node and can be paired with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem, making it the company's first 5G-capable platform for premium smartphones. Qualcomm said it has begun sampling the flagship platform to "multiple" OEMs, ahead of the expected launch of the first 5G services in late 2018 and early 2019.

Qualcomm said the market is on track to launch the first 5G mobile hotspots by the end of 2018, and smartphones using its next-generation mobile platform should be available in the first half of 2019.

The new platform is expected to be the successor to the Snapdragon 845, which is just hitting the market in flagship phones such as the Xiaomi Mi 8, LG G7 ThinQ and Smasung Galaxy Note 9. The 845 is built on 10nm nodes and supports gigabit LTE.
