Samsung unveils Exynos 5G modem, ready to ship by end-2018

Samsung Electronics announced its first 5G modem processor, the Exynos Modem 5100, compatible with 3GPP Release 15. The new modem built on 10-nm production supports the latest 5G New Radio standards as well as legacy mobile services on a single chip.

Samsung said it conducted an over-the-air 5G-NR data call test under a wireless environment using a 5G base station and prototype 5G end-user equipment embedded with the Exynos Modem 5100. The successful test simulated real-world cellular network conditions to help the company develop and commercialise 5G mobile devices running the modem. Samsung is already working with operators such as Verizon to bring 5G devices to market.

The Exynos Modem 5100 supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums specified in 3GPP’s 5G standard as well as legacy networks. The modem delivers a maximum downlink speed of up to 2 Gbps in 5G’s sub-6 GHz settings and 6 Gbps in mmWave settings. Over 4G networks, the device can reach around 1.6 Gbps download.

The Exynos Modem 5100 is also offered with radio frequency IC, Envelope Tracking and power management IC solutions, and will be available to customers by the end of 2018. The launch sees Samsung going ahead with direct competition with Qualcomm, to offer its processors to other smartphone makers. Qualcomm's own X50 5G modem is set to launch in devices in 2019.
