Rain plans to add 1 mln homes to 5G coverage in 7 months

South African operator Rain plans to accelerate its 5G network deployment to cover an estimated 5,000 new households each day for the rest of the year, MyBroadband reported. Rain aims to add over 1 million homes to its 5G coverage area over the next seven months. Rain is also planning to expand its 5G coverage to smaller towns.

Rain was the first to launch a commercial 5G service in South Africa in September 2019, offering a single uncapped, unthrottled package at ZAR 999 per month. It was initially only available in selected areas of Johannesburg and Pretoria, with 250 Rain 5G towers covering an estimated 500,000 households. Rain now says that it has expanded its 5G coverage almost six-fold since then and covers approximately 3 million residences in Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Cape Town.

Rain engineers, in partnership with Huawei’s Research and Development department in Shanghai, have implemented a number of upgrades to the 5G network. It has also expanded customer service alongside the growth of the network.
