Samsung is recalling its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone after finding problems with the device's battery. The company said it's suspending sales of the new flagship phone, and any customers who already have the phone will receive a free replacement in the coming weeks.
The announcement follows reports of batteries exploding on some of the phones. Samsung said 35 cases had been reported to the company globally as of 01 September, and its own investigation found a "battery cell issue". The company is in talks with suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market.
Samsung said it will work with US carriers to put a recall and exchange programme in place. T-Mobile US was among the first operators to announce it has already halted sales.
Samsung had previously said demand for the new Galaxy Note phone was far exceeding supply, forcing it to push back the launch date in some markets. After its official launch on 19 August in Korea, the large-screen Note quickly sold out there. Pre-orders exceeded 400,000 units in Korea, more than double the figure for the flagship Galaxy S7 launched in March.
