Samsung Electronics unveiled its new square-shaped foldable phones in a TV ad aired during the Oscars Academy Awards on 9 February, Reuters writes. Broadcast only in the US, the commercial came two days before its Galaxy Z Flip phones are due to be unveiled at an event in San Francisco. The phones come in at least purple and black colour versions and are expected to be less expensive than the USD 1,980 Galaxy Fold.
The new Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone will create a halo effect for Samsung’s brand and help it better compete with Apple’s pricey models, according to Tom Kang, an analyst at research firm Counterpoint.
According to research by Strategy Analytics, Samsung was the world’s number one foldable smartphone vendor in 2019, followed by Huawei in second place.
