SK Telecom hits 1 petabyte of daily mobile internet traffic
Korean mobile operator SK Telecom (SKT) has seen its daily data transfers hit 1 petabyte as the use of smartphones and tablets is growing in the country. The figure includes data traffic on the 3G network, Wi-Fi and SK Telecom's LTE network, Yonhap reports.

South Korea to boost internet speeds 10-fold

South Korea is planning to increase broadband speeds ten-fold to meet the fast growth in data traffic. Giga-speed internet connections will be available in most parts of South Korea by 2017, news agency Yonhap reports citing the ICT ministry. The ministry chose five companies, including KT and SK Telecom, as trial service providers. At the end of last year, the service already had 12,000 household subscribers.

SK Telecom's LTE subscribers top 10 mln

SK Telecom has said that its number of LTE subscribers topped 10 million in the week starting 15 April. The milestone came 21 months after the mobile operator launched the LTE service in July 2011. LTE subscribers account for 37 percent of its total mobile subscriber base, and the operator offers a total 33 LTE devices.

South Korean operator SK Telecom has introduced LTE-Advanced on its mobile network, offering speeds twice as fast as LTE. The operator plans to launch a commercial service in September. LTE-A is based on carrier aggregation technology, which bundles two frequency bands to increase the bandwidth. The network automatically chooses one of several frequency bands available based on data traffic at the user's location.

SK Broadband picks Alcatel-Lucent for packet network

SK Broadband, a subsidiary of Korean communications provider SK Telecom, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to build a packet transport network to meet the high-bandwidth data needs of enterprises throughout the country. SK Broadband will deploy Alcatel-Lucent's 1850 Transport Service Switch managed by its 1350 Optical Management Suite (OMS). SK selects NSN for 100G capacity expansion

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has started to introduce 100G technology into its existing 40G network, to increase its transmission capacity.
