SK Telecom hits 3 mln users of Nugu AI speaker

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom announced it has topped 3 million monthly users of its artificial-intelligence-based speaker Nugu at end-February. The device was first launched in late 2016. 

The total number of active users for its AI speakers grew to 3.63 million in February, Yonhap news agency reports. SK Telecom aims to reach 5 million monthly active users by year-end.

SKT to set up LTE-based communication network for Seoul subway

SK Telecom entered into a contract with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to set up a LTE-based mobile telecommunication system for railways on a section of the subway in Seoul, writes local publication koreatimes.com.kr citing a company announcement from 26 March. The operator said the network, called LTE-R, will ensure underground safety and connectivity in case of accidents and other emergency situations. The network supports mobile video calling on a high-speed train.

SK Telecom to launch AI-based music streaming platform

SK Telecom has partnered with entertainment companies in South Korea to launch a music streaming platform. Developed with SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and Big Hit Entertainment, the app is scheduled for launch later this year, Korea Joongang Daily reports. SK Telecom says its new platform will use artificial intelligence, 5G network and blockchain.

SK Telecom launched its T Map mobile navigation service in Korea in 2002. In July 2016, the company opened T-Map to subscribers of all mobile operators free of charge. T Map had around 10.14 million monthly active users at end-August 2017, taking up about 68 percent of the Korean mobile navigation market, according to SK Telecom data.

South Korean operator SK Telecom sold more than 40,000 units of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) home assistant service in four months, Yonhap news agency reports, citing unnamed market watchers.
