SK Telecom's Q2 revenues up 7% as mobile returns to growth
South Korean operator SK Telecom posted revenue of KRW 4.43 trillion for the second quarter of 2019, which represents an increase of 6.8 percent year-on-year. Growth was mainly boosted by a revenue turnaround in the mobile communications business and sustained growth in media, security and commerce businesses. Net income decreased by 30.7 percent quarter-on-quarter and by more than 71 percent year-on-year to KRW 259.1 billion, due to lower equity method gains from SK Hynix.

SK Telecom launched its 5G services on 3 April, and reached 530,000 5G subscribers at 30 June. The operator expects the number of 5G subscribers to surpass 2 million this year.

Operating income reached KRW 322.8 billion, down 6.9 percent year-on-year.

The operator also reports that its mobile service revenue achieved a turnaround after declining for seven consecutive quarters since the fourth quarter of 2017. Backed by its customer value innovation programs consistently implemented since 2018, SK Telecom said it achieved a low churn rate of 0.9 percent and added about 100,000 new subscribers in the second quarter of this year.

SK Telecom’s media business grew in the second quarter backed by the increase of IPTV and UHD subscribers. Its revenue increased by 15.2 percent year-on-year and 2.1 percent quarter-on-quarter to KRW 322.1 billion. SK Telecom plans to introduce a revamped OTT service in Korea by integrating its ‘oksusu’ and ‘POOQ’ platforms.

SK Telecom also plans to merge its SK Broadband unit with t-broad, a multiple system operator, to create a “Total Media Company” with more than 8 million subscribers.

SK Telecom’s security business saw its revenue and operating income increase by 7.5 percent and 26.7 percent, respectively compared to the previous quarter, backed by increased sales of ADT Caps’ security products and expansion of SK Infosec’s converged security platform business. SK Telecom plans to achieve yearly revenue of KRW 1 trillion for the first time in its security business through its T Map Parking and converged security services of ADT Caps and SK Infosec.
