LG U+ delivers fastest 5G speeds, lowest latency in South Korea - study
LG U+ delivers the fastest 5G speeds and lowest latency among all networks in South Korea, according to a report from RootMetrics by IHS Markit. The study found that each operator’s median download speeds on 5G were much faster than those on non-5G mode or LTE. All three operators, namely LG U+, KT and SK Telecom, were on 5G during at least 42.2 percent of RootMetrics download tests.

The report further indicates that KT and LG U+ led in latency, with both operators’ 5G median download latency twice as fast as that recorded in non-5G mode. LG U+ had a 5G median download speed of 426.4 Mbps and the operator’s non-5G mode median download speed was 96.1 Mbps would take closer to 51 seconds. LG U+ also delivered the fastest 5G maximum download speed at 902.7 Mbps. 

KT delivered the slowest 5G median download speed across all networks at 163.0 Mbps. SK Telecom, meanwhile, delivered strong speeds that were faster than those of KT but not as fast as those of LG U+. SK Telecom’s 5G median download speed reached 286.9 Mbps, and its non-5G mode median download speed was 115.3 Mbps.

South Korea recently reached the milestone of 2 million 5G subscribers in four months after the service was commercially launched on the local market, Yonhap news agency reports, citing industry data. The country’s three mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus commercially launched fully-fledged 5G mobile networks on 3 April. The number of South Koreans with subscriptions to a 5G service stood at 260,000 at the beginning of May, to reach 1 million in mid-June.

SK Telecom passes 1 million 5G subscribers milestone

South Korean operator SK Telecom announced it has passed the milestone of 1 million 5G subscribers in the first 140 days since the launch of its 5G network on 3 April. The company's 5G subscribers account for more than 3.5 percent of SK Telecom's total subscriber base of 28 million.

South Korean mobile operator LG Uplus saw its second-quarter net profit plunge 28.1 percent year-on-year to KRW 98.5 billion for the three months ended 30 June 2019, from KRW 135.6 billion in the year-earlier period. Revenue increased 7.3 percent year-on-year to KRW 3.19 trillion, while operating income declined 29.6 percent year-on-year to KRW 148.6 billion.

SK Telecom's Q2 revenues up 7% as mobile returns to growth

South Korean operator SK Telecom posted revenue of KRW 4.43 trillion for the second quarter of 2019, which represents an increase of 6.8 percent year-on-year. Growth was mainly boosted by a revenue turnaround in the mobile communications business and sustained growth in media, security and commerce businesses. Net income decreased by 30.7 percent quarter-on-quarter and by more than 71 percent year-on-year to KRW 259.1 billion, due to lower equity method gains from SK Hynix.

South Korea wants ITU to adopt its 5G services as global standards

South Korea has proposed that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) adopt its 5G technologies as global standards, Yonhap news agency reports, citing the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT. The United States topped the initial ranking of 5G download measured by OpenSignal in 8 of the countries that have already launched 5G services. LG Uplus to launch 5G cloud gaming service in South Korea

South Korean mobile operator LG Uplus plans to launch a cloud-based virtual reality gaming service this year. The VR service will use the Uplus 5G network, Yonhap news agency reports.
