South Korea tops 1 million 5G subscribers in first two months
South Korea reached 1 million subscribers to its 5G networks on 10 June, Yonhap news agency reports citing government data. The country’s three mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus commercially launched fully-fledged 5G mobile networks on 3 April. The number of South Koreans with subscriptions to a 5G service stood at 260,000 at the beginning of May.

South Korea currently has 61,246 mobile base stations, up nearly 7 percent, or 3,980, from 8 May. According to the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT, operators will start deploying signal relay nodes at airports, train stations, shopping malls and inside large buildings from next week.

The Ministry also reports that 5G smartphone manufacturers Samsung and LG have released software patches to solve initial problems in reception and declines in connectivity speed, which have drawn criticism from 5G subscribers.
