Sky wins exclusive rights to Champions League in Germany

Sky Deutschland has won the exclusive rights to show the Uefa Champions League in Germany and Austria. The pay-TV provider will broadcast the football matches from the 2018/19 season through 2020/21 across satellite, cable, IPTV, web and mobile platforms. Sky will issue a sub-licence to The Perform Group to show the matches on its streaming platform DAZN. 

This marks the first time the league will be available only on pay-TV in Germany. Previously broadcaster ZDF showed some matches on free-to-air TV, but ZDF was unable to justify the price for the rights this time around. According to a report from Wiwo.de, Sky may consider showing some of the matches on Sky Sports News, its free-to-air channel launched in 2016.

While no financial details of Sky's contract were announced, media reports suggested the company paid in the "hundreds of millions of euros".

Dazn to air highlights from World Cup matches on platform

Streaming platform Dazn said it will be showing highlights from matches from this summer's 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on its platform. Dazn has sub-licensed the highlights from all 64 World Cup matches for Germany from the sports' rights agency SportA, with clips from matches available on its platform in Germany as soon as 45 minutes after matches end. Viewers can access these clips at no extra cost as part of Dazn's standard EUR 9.99 per month subscription package.

DAZN to show UEFA Europa League games in Germany, Austria

Streaming platform DAZN, owned by Perform Group, has secured the rights to show all UEFA Europa League games live in Germany and Austria, Broadband TV News reports. Financial terms of the deal, effective from the start of the 2018/2019 season, were not disclosed. DAZN will show all 205 games, including 190 exclusively, with 15 games screened in parallel by a free-to-air partner. The rights were previously held by Sky Deutschland.

Sportdigital, DAZN buy Portuguese football rights

Sportdigital and DAZN have acquired the rights to show the Portuguese football league's matches in Germany. The Nos Primeira League rights were bought for the next three years from Lagardere Sports Agency and will be available on the Sportdigital linear pay-TV channels and the DAZN streaming service. In addition to at least three live matches each week, the rights include weekly highlights and clips.

Sky Deutschland is not bidding for the rights to the Uefa Europa League, according to a report from Wiwo.de. Sky still shows selected games from the league and recently bought rights to the Uefa Champions League. The report said Dazn is bidding for the streaming rights for the Europa league, and RTL is vying with existing holder Sport 1 for free-to-air rights. The rights are expected to sell for around EUR 50 million.
