Turner secures Champions League rights, launches sports OTT platform in US

Turner Broadcasting System has announced a three-year multi-platform rights agreement to air the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League in the US, beginning with the 2018-19 season. At the same time, the broadcaster also revealed plans to launch a new standalone premium sports streaming video service for US consumers in 2018. In a statement, Turner said the standalone service will broadcast the vast majority of the matches, with live games and content also available on its TBS, TNT and truTV cable channels as well as its sports website Bleacher Report.

Turner’s new sports OTT platform is part of the company’s growing portfolio of online streaming offerings, including FilmStruck for movie fans and cartoon-based Boomerang launched earlier this year.

The company refrained from disclosing how much it paid for the US rights but earlier this year Sports Business Journal reported that the broadcaster shelled out some USD 60 million, far more than the amount paid by existing rights holder Fox Sports. Fox partnered earlier this year with Facebook to show some of the soccer matches live over the social network.
