Sky beats Mediaset to Italian Champions League rights

Sky Italia has been awarded the exclusive rights to broadcast UEFA Champions League football games in Italy from 2018 after outbidding commercial broadcaster Mediaset. In a statement Sky said it won rights to air over 340 Champions League and Europa League games from 2018 to 2021 for an undisclosed amount. An unnamed Reuters source earlier said the company had bid around EUR 270-290 million per season, with Mediaset’s bid in excess of the EUR 227 million per season it offered when it won the previous 2014 auction. The new Champions League format will feature four Italian teams, increasing the minimum number of games featuring Italian teams by around 70 percent compared to the average over the last five years.

Sky also won the exclusive rights to show the UEFA Champions League in Germany and Austria, where it will issue a sub-licence to The Perform Group to show the matches on its streaming platform DAZN. However, it missed out in Britain, where BT paid GBP 1.2 billion to retain the Champions League rights, while in France the rights were secured by Altice for EUR 350 million a year.
