SoftBank, Netflix strike partnership agreement in Japan

Japanese operator SoftBank and internet TV network Netflix have announced that SoftBank will exclusively offer a fully integrated Netflix experience, including billing, when Netflix launches in Japan on 2 September. Netflix has also announced monthly pricing for the Japanese market. Customers will be able to opt for the Basic, Standard or Premium Plan for prices starting from JPY 650.

The Basic Plan will offer single-stream standard definition for JPY 650 per month (pre-tax), the Standard Plan will provide two simultaneous streams in HD for JPY 950, and the Premium Plan will allow four streams in up to 4K ultra-high definition for JPY 1,450 per month.

Under the terms of the agreement, SoftBank customers will be able to sign up for Netflix at SoftBank Shops, major electronics retailers, via the SoftBank website and via SoftBank call centres without filling out payment information, with Netflix’s monthly fee added to their bill. In addition, SoftBank will start pre-installing the Netflix app on its smartphones for sale after October.

Ucom leads first Netflix speed index in Japan

Netflix has released its first ISP speed index for Japan, following the streaming service's launch in the country last month. Japan came 11th out of all Netflix countries with an average download speed of 3.62 Mbps. Ucom was the fastest provider with an average speed of 3.99 Mbps, followed by K-Opticom with 3.88 Mbps, So-net at 3.85 Mbps and Asahi Net and NTTPC InfoSphere each at 3.81 Mbps. Netflix to go live in Cambodia in 2016

Global internet TV network Netflix plans to launch pay-TV services in Cambodia next year, Netflix spokesman Jonathan Friedland told the Phnom Penh Post. "We intend to offer our service globally by the end of 2016 and that includes Cambodia", said Friedland. Japan cable companies to launch 4K channel in Dec

Thirty-nine Japanese cable television content providers have partnered to launch a national channel dedicated to 4K UHD programming starting in December, Nikkei reports. The initial participants include Jupiter Telecommunications (J:Com) and KDDI. Around 370 companies are expect to gradually join the project. The Japan Cable and Telecommunications Association is inviting content providers to join the initiative, and more than 110 have expressed an intention to take part.
