Sony confirms Europe tablet launch for late September
Sony confirmed its first tablet PC, the Sony Tablet S, will launch in Europe at the end of September. The device features a 9.4-inch touchscreen display, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor inside, and front and rear cameras. It will initially be available with Android 3.1 in 16GB and 32GB versions with Wi-Fi, while a 3G version with 16GB storage memory and Android 3.2 will launch in November. Also available in November is the Sony Tablet P, a smaller device that folds open to reveal two 5.5-inch screens. It also comes with the Tegra 2 chip and offers connectivity via Wi-Fi and 3G. Wi-Fi only models are equipped with Android 3.1 (to be upgradable to Android 3.2) and Wi-Fi/3G models come with Android 3.2. Sony will launch new content services with the tablets, including Video Unlimited for downloading movies and TV episodes, and Music Unlimited, a cloud-based music service with over 10 million songs. The devices will also be compatible with PlayStation games. In addition, Sony will launch a new e-book store in Europe, starting in the UK in late October, Germany by year-end and France, Italy and Spain in spring 2012. Tablet owners will also get their own 'Personal Space', a free cloud storage service. Sony is also linking the tablets to its other consumer electronic devices, with DLNA and Media Remote on both tablets to connect wirelessly to other devices and infrared on the Tablet S to turn it into a remote control.
