Sony to end Playstation Vue OTT TV service

Sony announced it will shut down its OTT TV service in the US, PlayStation Vue. Started four years ago, the service will end on 30 January 2020. 

Sony said the "highly competitive pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected". As a result, it's decided to focus instead on its core gaming business. 

PlayStation owners can continue to access movie and TV content through the PlayStation Store on PS4 and through entertainment apps on the gaming console. Sony has over 100 million PlayStation 4s in the market, providing a platform for continued entertainment services, it said. 

Sony was among the first to launch a live OTT TV service in the US, including access to local channels. Since Vue's launch, many new players have entered the market, such as YouTube TV, AT&T and Philo.

YouTube TV announced it's expanding its distribution in the US to the Sony Playstation platform. The subscription OTT TV service is now available via an app on Playstation 4, YouTube announced on Twitter.

The Telecompaper Global Media Index was up 1.9 percent in week 44, beating the S&P 500's gain of 1.5 percent. There were some big winners, including Zee Entertainment (+29%), ComScore (+28%), Spotify (+22%) and MTG/Modern Times Group (+22%). Criteo (-16%) and McClatchy (-14%) were the biggest losers. Much of the news was either earnings or VOD related.

Sony lowers FY sales outlook on slower hardware sales, profit outlook up on cost savings

Sony reported a small drop of 3 percent in revenues for its fiscal second quarter to September, hurt by lower sales of gaming consoles, TVs and smartphones. On a constant currency basis, revenues were roughly flat at JPY 2.122 trillion, as growth in streaming music, the takeover of EMI and more sales of imaging sensors offset the weaker hardware market. Profits improved, helped by lower impairment and restructuring charges, and Sony raised its profit targets for the full fiscal year.

Sony looking for sell PlayStation Vue - report

Sony is looking to sell its OTT internet television platform PlayStation Vue, the Information reported. The company has asked for help from Bank of America Merrill Lynch with the sale, which could bring in "tens of millions," sources said. FuboTV was approached about the sale, but declined to comment on the report.

Sony raises price of PlayStation Vue subscription service

Sony's OTT internet television platform PlayStation Vue raised the price of all of its multi-channel plans by USD 5. This change became effective on 1 July for new customers. Existing customers will keep their current price for at least 30 days and will see the new price beginning on their first billing cycle on or after 31 July.

Sony introduces Cloud Remote for PS4 with free Vue subscription

Sony launched the new Cloud Remote for PS4 that can auto-detect and control end-users' TVs. The remote control works with the downloadable PDP Cloud Remote App, which can auto-detect devices connected to the PS4 for remote programming. The Cloud Remote for PS4 will sell for a recommended retail price of USD 29.99 and can be pre-ordered now at PDP's website, as well as at GameStop and Amazon.

PlayStation Vue passes over 100,000 customers - report

PlayStation Vue, the OTT TV service for owners of Sony game consoles, has signed up more than 100,000 subscribers since its March 2015 debut, people with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg. The service has been adding customers at a faster rate since Sony began a nationwide roll-out in the US three months ago, the report said. One person put the total near 120,000. The streaming TV service offers access to over 100 live TV channels, as well as a cloud DVR for recording programmes.
