Spotify doubles paid subscribers to 4 mln

Digital music service Spotify has more than doubled its subscriber base a year after launching in the US. Ken Parks, Spotify's chief content officer, said that it now had more than 4 million paying customers, up from 2 million last September, the Financial Times reports. Parks was speaking at the Global Business Summit on Creative Content in London. He said the company's free users now total more than 15 million, up from over 10 million in January. At the beginning of the year, Spotify announced that it had 3 million paying subscribers, equal to over 20 percent of its use base. This has now risen to over 25 percent. Separately Spotify announced an upgrade to its Android app that allows users to listen to the 'radio' function free. Users need to save playlists on the desktop application, and they can then access the songs free from their Android device.
