Swatch Group develops smartwatch operating system

Switzerland-based watchmaker Swatch Group has announced plans to develop a proprietary operating system for smartwatches as an alternative to iOS and Android. Swatch brand Tissot will introduce a smartwatch model at the end of 2018 that uses the new operating system, according to a report by Bloomberg. It will also be able to connect other small wearables.

The system is likely to need less battery power and offer better data protection, Swatch CEO Nick Hayek claimed. Shortly after the announcement, Swatch rival Richemont has also announced the upcoming launch of its first smartwatch, the Montblanc Summit, which will run on Android 2.0 technology, the Bloomberg report said.
